New Zealand signed the construction contract for the rebuilt Scott Base on 30 July 2026, awarding the work to the Wellington firm LT McGuinness. Antarctica New Zealand announced the award, and the signing put one of the country's largest infrastructure projects back on track. The project had been on hold since 2023, when costs exceeded the original budget. The new contract ends that pause. The signing moves the redevelopment from planning into the construction phase.
The New Zealand government approved a fresh project plan in May, carrying a budget of 498 million New Zealand dollars, about 288 million US dollars. The core scientific and operational functions of the station stayed in the plan, and the construction design was simplified. The review and the new plan are what allowed the project to restart after the 2023 cost overrun.
A 3,000-square-metre services building is the centrepiece
The centrepiece of the redevelopment is a new base services building of 3,000 square metres. The Hillary Field Centre is being extended, and the outdated water, wastewater and energy infrastructure is being replaced completely. The built-up area of Scott Base will grow from around 5,000 to 6,500 square metres. The planned station also includes modern research and operational buildings, according to the artist's impression released by Antarctica New Zealand. Together, the new services building, the extended field centre and the replaced infrastructure make this a comprehensive redevelopment rather than a partial upgrade.
The energy side of the project is as substantial as the buildings. Three wind turbines at Scott Base on Ross Island already supply a large proportion of the renewable electricity used by Scott Base and by the neighbouring US McMurdo Station. The modernisation expands the wind farm and adds a battery storage system. The aim is a higher share of renewable energy and a more reliable electricity supply to both stations. That makes the rebuild an energy project for the whole Ross Island site, not just for Scott Base.
Ross Island allows about 100 construction days per year
Construction will take place over several Antarctic summer seasons, because Ross Island offers a construction window of only around 100 days per year. The work is spread across seasons by necessity, not by choice. In the coming season, drilling and pile-driving work will begin, along with the transport of building materials for the main construction phase in 2027/28. Completion of the modernised Scott Base is still scheduled for 2030.

Scott Base does not get a new power system in isolation. The two stations share the wind resource on Ross Island, so the redevelopment changes power logistics for two national programmes, not one. The work at Scott Base therefore has a direct effect on McMurdo's power supply.
