The Gulf War forced Terra Nova Expeditions to change ships for its inaugural Antarctic season. The start-up said this week that St. Helena cannot reposition from the Persian Gulf safely and in time for the 2026/27 season because of the ongoing situation in the Middle East. AIS transmissions place the Djibouti-registered ship near Port Rashid in Dubai. The company said it spent months working to secure an alternate vessel before abandoning St. Helena.
St. Helena had already escaped scrapping
The liner was built at Appledore Shipyard in the UK and commissioned in 1990. St. Helena is 344 feet, or 105 meters, and about 6,800 gross tons. Her 14-knot service between Cape Town, Saint Helena and Ascension Island kept the remote British outpost connected before an airport existed. The island lies more than 1,100 miles west of Africa. The arrival of air service ended that job, and the ship retired in 2018 despite protests from loyal supporters. St. Helena was one of the last long-distance Royal Mail Ships in service.
The ship did not go to the breakers. St. Helena spent time as a vessel-based armory in the Gulf of Oman, then passed to the car racing group Extreme E, which used the ship to move materials and cars. Extreme E carried out an extensive renovation in 2022 that included engines, systems, cabins and public spaces.
Terra Nova Expeditions emerged in 2025 with a plan to charter St. Helena and refit it for Antarctic voyages. The first departure was set for December 2026. That plan has now been abandoned. The company presented Terra Nova Adventurer as a suitable replacement, though not the quirky St. Helena.
The replacement has Antarctic experience
Terra Nova Expeditions said it secured a three-year charter of the ship that formerly operated as the Expedition and the G Expedition, and will rechristen it Terra Nova Adventurer. The company says its Antarctic itineraries and expedition program will continue as planned. The charter runs through the 2028/29 season.
The replacement started as a passenger car ferry in the Baltic in 1972. After a 2008 rebuild for expedition cruising, it sailed for the Canadian company G Adventures in Antarctica, the Arctic and other remote destinations. The 6,333 gross ton ship currently appears laid up as the Vestland Adventurer, registered in Liberia.
Terra Nova Expeditions plans a refresh before the ship's first season with the company. The work includes new soft furnishings and decor, remodeled bar and lounge areas, and a Jacuzzi and sauna on Deck 5. The company says the result will combine the vessel's established expedition credentials with a refreshed onboard experience aligned with its small-ship polar travel approach.
St. Helena's future is now uncertain. The ship had been due for a new career in Antarctica; instead it remains in the Gulf region. For anyone considering a 2026/27 voyage, the practical question to put to Terra Nova Expeditions is whether the switch affects the itinerary, the expedition team or the onboard experience, and what the three-year charter means for seasons beyond 2028/29.
